Top-Surface Breaking

Top-surface breaking

How to measure the height of top-surface breaking indications. It should be noted that a wedge delay calibration must be done prior to measuring.

  1. The indication is located and zoomed-in
  2. One cursor is placed on the lateral wave. In this case the first positive peak is considered 0
  3. The other cursor is placed on the lower tip. Since the lower tip has the same phase as the lateral wave, the cursor is placed on the first positive peak
  4. The difference between the two cursors is the height. In this case, 2.5 mm

Sometimes the lower tip can look like the lateral wave has moved downward a little so it can be hard to spot especially if the surface is not straight. In case of doubt, a visual inspection and/or an inspection with another method should be considered.
