Top-surface breaking
How to measure the height of top-surface breaking indications. It should be noted that a wedge delay calibration must be done prior to measuring.
- The indication is located and zoomed-in
- One cursor is placed on the lateral wave. In this case the first positive peak is considered 0
- The other cursor is placed on the lower tip. Since the lower tip has the same phase as the lateral wave, the cursor is placed on the first positive peak
- The difference between the two cursors is the height. In this case, 2.5 mm
Sometimes the lower tip can look like the lateral wave has moved downward a little so it can be hard to spot especially if the surface is not straight. In case of doubt, a visual inspection and/or an inspection with another method should be considered.
