Attenuation: Absorption


As the ultrasound wave travels through the part, its energy is gradually transformed into heat.

  1. An ultrasound wave is emitted
  2. As it travels through the material, the wave is displacing atoms. Part of the wave’s energy is then converted into heat. The result is a lower amplitude wave at the bottom of the part

The crystalline structure of the material as well as the wave propagation mode and frequency influence the level of absorption.
